Master programme sociology

In order to enroll in the master programme of sociology at the University of Vienna, a degree (Bachelor, baccalaureate, undergraduate degree) in sociology or a subject relevant field of study is required. When applying to this programme, please keep in mind that a proof of German language proficiency at Level C1 is required. In order to acquire level C1 you may participate in a German course of the University Preparation Programme of the Vienna Universities (VWU). The majority of courses are taught in German, while the few select offered courses taught in English would not suffice to complete this degree.

It is essential for the administrative admission’s process if you have obtained your degree in sociology at the University of Vienna or at different University or if you have obtained a degree in a different field of study.
-> Master Access Guide

If your degree can generally be deemed as equivalent to that of a BA in sociology and only a few select additions are necessary to qualify for full equivalence, it is possible to achieve qualification for admission to this programme through additional courses and exams, adding up to a maximum amount of 30 ECTS, which will be completed during the master programme. We strongly advise completing these additional courses at the beginning of your studies, in order to compensate for any lack of knowledge and to be able to easily follow mandatory classes. The general admission’s deadlines for the respective semester can be found in the student web portal.

Make use of the information provided on our website (available only in German) in order to gain a better understanding of contents, goals, predetermined courses and further specifics of the study programme. The course “Forschungsspezialisierung – Einführung und Überblick”, which we recommend attending at the start of your studies, will provide a brief overview of the study programme. You can also obtain more information from our student’s representatives’ colleagues and from the student web portal.
